Overview

For this project, we have to make use of the concepts of conservation of energy, kinetic and potential energy. The concept of vectors will be introduced. The main objective of this challenge is to determine which angle of inclination will allow a metal ball bearing travel across a horizontal track fastest.

What is the angle of inclination that gives the shortest travel time in Challenge 1 and 2?

For both, it is 35.2 degrees.

What precautions have you taken in order to ensure consistency of your results?


We released the ball with a protractor, pulling the protractor away. Therefore, we do not give extra momentum or power to the ball, ensuring unaffected results.

Using the calculating and graphing tools, it shows that 35.2 is most effective to generate the most kinetic energy.

    • Discuss how the project has helped to deepen your understanding/ broaden your awareness on selected subject discipline(s).
    We now know how to make use of the tools around us to make more efficient testing, and also to ensure a greater accuracy, as human errors can sometimes affect results severely.
    • Describe how the new learning is/ can be connected to what you learnt/ are going to learn.
    We can apply this to other problems, solving them more efficiently instead of guessing without the help of tools we are given. Also, we now know how to pick out human errors which may affect our results drastically and replace that role with a more suitable method.
